Do you love horses? Do you wish that you had a horse of your very own? If so, then you’re going to want to check out this new series that spotlights lots of different breeds of horses. You’ll get to learn about many different types of horses, their care, and which one might be best for you.
In one of the first books in this new series, American Quarter Horses are My Favorite, you will get to meet the quarter horse up close and personal. Do you know what colors quarter horses come in? How about how tall they are and how much they weigh? These facts and others are covered as well as introducing the reader to Docs Keepin Time, a real Hollywood star.
There are three chapters in this book, “Meet the American Quarter Horse,” “Horse History,” and “The Real Deal,” a glossary and a “For More Information” page that provide a nice overview of the quarter horse. Basic points of horse ownership are covered such as boarding a horse and daily stall maintenance. It’s nice to see that the text includes a reality check for lovelorn horse fans on just how much work is involved in the proper care of an equine. The photos that accompany the text are standard fare and rather generic, there’s nothing noteworthy (for example, it would have been nice to have a picture of Docs Keepin Time, the horse mentioned above who was given his own sidebar but no picture), but horse-crazy youngsters will be happy nonetheless to see the numerous four-hooved shots. For those serious about horse ownership, a more in-depth book will be needed, while this title will suit those who are still in the dreaming phase.
Quill says: A nice, basic, starter-book to introduce young horse fans to the American quarter horse.
