Christopher Keating delivers a fantastic journey across the pages of his latest novel, Dog Run, Texas.
Dallas Williams has entered the next chapter in his life. Since the loss of his wife and child to a car accident, he struggles to find purpose. He’s a successful patent attorney for a prestigious firm in Austin, Texas. He’s revered by his coworkers when it comes to his knowledge, expertise and ability. Lately, however, he can’t seem to focus on much of anything. He gets lost in the mindless doodling of the number ‘110’ over and over on his notepad. When his boss, J. Roy Bedicheck, stops by Dallas’ office, he isn’t surprised to discover Dallas doing what he’s typically doing most days: daydreaming and doodling. It was time for someone to give Dallas a wake-up call.
Bedicheck suggests it’s time Dallas take a leave of absence from the firm to sort out his life. Unsure of where to begin, Dallas figures packing a bag and touring the great state of Texas is a good start. He isn’t sure where to go and what to do. He knows once he gets there, he’ll recognize he has arrived at his destination. He spends a few days here and a couple more there. Through all his crisscrossing of the state, he’s taken by surprise when he realizes he is headed back to his Austin home. However, while driving through the hill country, he’s not sure why his car convinced him to turn onto highway 110 toward Dog Run. It was a sign. There was that number 110 again. Perhaps Dog Run is his destination after all.
Christopher Keating has spun a delightful tale among the pages of Dog Run, Texas. He is a master of setting up a scene and guiding his audience along the way. There is an abundance of descriptive scenery that lends way to credible dialogue and together, they complement the characters to this story. Keating has an innate sense of where and when to create a situation and just when the reader thinks he/she has it figured out; Keating adds a ‘not so fast’ twist to keep those pages turning. Keating has a wonderful conversational tone to his writing that showcases his storytelling abilities throughout this read. I find myself wondering how it is I’ve not had the pleasure of reading any of his previous work.
