In Cake, Lemonade, and Sprinkles by Aishah Hight, London is experiencing a serious dilemma. Her costume party is mere days away and she hasn’t decided on what she wants to dress up as yet. She’s so sad about it, that her mom tries helping her figure out what costume will best reflect how special and unique London truly is. Her mom tells her she thinks the costume should include a combination of London’s two loves – science and technology. In doing so, it will make whatever London decides to wear even more special and personalized. What costume does London finally decide to wear that highlights just how special she truly is?

This was such an enjoyable story to read! Readers can’t help but feel sad as London is faced with the tough decision of what perfect costume to wear at her party. You’ll find yourself, as an adult, wanting to offer her different suggestions as to what she could be. Young readers will find themselves thinking of a variety of ideas of not only what London could dress up as, but also what they would wear if they were going to the party as well.

One special thing that resonated throughout this wonderful children’s book was the theme of being special and unique. Children will come away learning that just as London was special and unique in her own way, so is each child that reads London’s story. It is so important to instill that in children at a young age and Ms. Hight did a remarkable job achieving that goal with this second book in the London Learns series.

The illustrations done by Whimsical Designs by CJ were vibrantly colored and encompassed every single page of this fun children’s story. The pictures were full-paged and perfectly accompanied the written text. Each illustration was a delight to look at and readers will eagerly turn the pages to see what London was up to in the next picture. Looking at each illustration was just as much fun as reading the story!
