I grew up in a village in northern New Jersey that had only a single road passing through it. In that way, my hometown was very much like Fayetteville NY, the setting for my novel, High Bridge. I think I have much in common with my two protagonists - Grover Cleveland and Matilda Joslyn Gage.
As a child, like young Cleveland, I played baseball as often as I could. Though my skills were less than stellar, I thought it was fun to bounce balls against my garage door or a convenient wall, play pickle with friends, or bat pitched balls with solid maple Louisville sluggers. I lived for Little League and Babe Ruth League ball until my attention shifted to tennis and frisbee.
Like Matilda, I enjoy doing research. I find it great fun and rewarding to learn why things are the way they are. When I was in high school, I cut my teeth on library research. I also cut classes, not to goof off, but rather to be a nerd by visiting Patience and Fortitude at the New York Public Library and researching history projects. I tapped this innate curiosity while earning my B.A. in biology and doctorate in biomedical science.
In addition to learning more through reading and research, my greatest senses of accomplishment have come from being a father and teacher, roles that are not far from one another. Helping people learn how to piece things together, master tasks, and set on their own paths of adventure and discovery is immensely rewarding. Since retiring, I devote my energy to our local Learning in Retirement program. I believe you can teach an old dog new tricks.
