A Friend for Hope is a touching story about how a lonely nine-year old finds a true friend in the most unexpected place.

In the beginning, the author introduces us to Zoe from a third person’s point of view and this establishes a subtle distance between the protagonist and the reader, echoing the same sense of isolation and loneliness that the young girl probably felt while watching other children playing outside. The scene makes us wonder why she is not playing along with them. Soon, the focus shifts to her parents who try to come up with a plan to cheer her up.

There is something about the silent imaginative child, her thoughtful parents who encourage her to adopt a dog from an animal shelter, the quiet old dog who refuses to move from the corner and even the muted color palette of the illustrations that gently speak to us. The story doesn’t impose its ideas on us, instead it suggests us like whispers in the wind, to be more empathetic and inclusive. Like Hope, there are times when we need more time to feel comfortable enough to open up or be ourselves in front of new people. Maybe by portraying Zoe as a child who keeps trying to build a bond with her dog despite her aloof attitude, the author wants to encourage us to try to be more proactive and patient while forging relationships.

The little gestures make all the difference. The author doesn’t tell us Zoe was sad or filled with sympathy, she leaves it to the reader to fill the gaps and this liberty to imagine the finer details makes us more invested in the plot. We relate with the character and her benevolence makes us feel good about ourselves. For children, this kind of storytelling is very important. It serves as a role model and helps them form an idea of the kind of person they wish to become. It is a story made with care and the wholesome theme makes it an enjoyable read for both children and adults alike.

Quill says: A Friend for Hope is a beautiful book of love, friendship and Hope for new beginnings.
